Gale, Algarve, Portugal from Korsikoff, August 2010

Was Gale, Algarve good for the kids?:

Yes. The Algarve can be relied upon for a great family holiday, and even though we travelled in August, nothing was ridiculously busy. Maybe this is a result of the current tough economic times, but it was apparent that a number of holiday villas were empty (not in the Villas Rufino complex though). We would definitely go back.

The resort of Gale is fairly small, and you probably need a car to get to the restaurants, which all cater well for children of all ages. There are a number of beaches around (two or three within walking distance of the Villas) and all offer something a bit different (one of the beaches has fabulous rock-pooling opportunities at low tide).

What was your accommodation in Gale, Algarve?

Type: Villa
Name: Villas Rufino

How was 'Villas Rufino' for the children?:

Accommodation suitability for children rating: 5 stars

Outstanding.  The specific Villa accommodation we stayed in was excellent for children from the ages of about 2 to 12. These villas were the Villas Rufino, available within the Thomas Cook Style Villas brochure (they also have their own website which provides some great photos). The villas were arranged in terraced blocks of 10 (20 villas for the whole complex) and were spacious, with particularly good sized bedrooms and lounge area.

Each villa has a terrace with table and chairs and built-in BBQ. Thomas Cook provide a kids club from 10am - 12 noon M-F and one evening slot per week (7pm to 10pm). The pool is fabulous, with an excellent kids pool too. There are plenty of sun loungers (you can wander down at noon and still get 3/4 loungers) and sit round the kids pool letting your little ones enjoy the water. There is a small poolside bar.

Don't know if they supply cots for babies - I am pretty sure they do, but worth checking with Thomas Cook.

Did you eat out with your children in Gale, Algarve and how was it?

Eating out for children rating: 4 stars

Often ate on our terrace, but probably 4/5 good restaurants within a 5 minute drive. Nearest restaurant within walking distance was about 10 - 15 minutes walk.

How were the things to do for the children in Gale?

Activities for children rating: 4 stars

Due to this complex being aimed at families there were a lot of children around - which was great. Our 9 year made plenty of friends over the two weeks and left us in peace most of the time! Our 3 year old also enjoyed the compnay of other little ones, and although we obviously needed to keep an eye out for her, she would spend hours int he kids pool playing with mum and dad just a feet away enjoying the sun!

The famous Zoomarine park is just 15 minutes away by car (great for kids of all ages...and adults) while there are a couple of water parks within 40 minutes drive. Slide and Splash is particularly recommended although get there early to stake your claim to a place near the wonderful kids splash pool. Older kids (maybe from about 7/8...and including dads) will love the slides.
